India and Pakistan have agreed to a full and immediate ceasefire following talks mediated by the United States, former US President Donald Trump announced on Saturday. In a post on Truth Social, Trump said, “After a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a FULL AND IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE. Congratulations to both countries for using Common Sense and Great Intelligence.”
The ceasefire agreement follows three days of military action across the border. According to Indian officials, the latest escalation was triggered by a terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam last month that killed 26 people. In response, India launched “Operation Sindoor,” which targeted nine terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. Among the targets were the Muridke headquarters of Lashkar-e-Taiba and the Bahawalpur base of Jaish-e-Mohammed.
India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri stated that a call took place between the Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) of Pakistan and India at 3:35 PM on Saturday. Both sides agreed to halt all military action—land, air, and sea—from 5 PM the same day. Misri also confirmed that the DGMOs will hold another round of discussions at noon on May 12 to monitor the situation and follow up on the agreement.
Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar also confirmed the ceasefire on social media, stating, “Pakistan and India have agreed to a ceasefire with immediate effect. Pakistan has always strived for peace and security in the region, without compromising on its sovereignty and territorial integrity.” External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar posted, “India and Pakistan have today worked out an understanding on stoppage of firing and military action,” adding that India’s stance against terrorism remains unchanged.
United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that he and Vice President JD Vance had engaged with Indian and Pakistani leadership over the past 48 hours. Rubio said discussions involved Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Shehbaz Sharif, External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Chief of Army Staff Asim Munir, and National Security Advisors Ajit Doval and Asim Malik. He said, “I am pleased to announce the Governments of India and Pakistan have agreed to an immediate ceasefire and to start talks on a broad set of issues at a neutral site.”
